Communication Designers at IDEO routinely work on projects that spread across print, packaging, brand identity and interactive designs for screens, devices and spaces. Working at IDEO means you’ll tackle all aspects of the design process from user research to physical prototyping to telling the project story to the client. We are looking for designers who want to blend visual strategy and graphic design to tell powerful stories about our designs. We encourage our designers to bring their own unique style and visual voice to each design challenge we work on.
Once you are here you will
Set the visual design direction of each project through strategy, graphics and storytelling.
Work on a variety of projects that integrate digital, graphic and product design.
Collaborate with designers with different backgrounds such as industrial designers, mechanical engineers and interaction designers.
Create prototypes of different levels of fidelity to help teams determine the design direction for a project.
Be empowered to advocate for exceptional visual design
Help clients empathize with users by creating deliverables that tell a compelling story.

Melon: IDEO helped start-up Melon rebrand themselves and launch a successful kickstarter campaign to fund
their breakthrough technology that enables people to measure their brain activity and track their mental focus.
Chicago Fire: Major League Soccer Champions, The Chicago Fire, were having trouble convincing new fans
to come to their stadium. Wanting to capitalize on World Cup fever, the club asked IDEO to create memorable
marketing campaigns and fan experiences to get more Chicagoans fired up and filling seats.
Society of Grownups: Together with Mass Mutual we created a sort of master’s program for adulthood, where the curriculum covers everything from investing in a 401K to having that hard talk about a budget to how to pick good, cheap wine. IDEO helped build the new venture from the ground up—designing a brand identity, a digital platform with some of the most sophisticated financial planning tools in the industry, and a hip brick-and-mortar locale.
3 + years graphic design experience across a variety of media (print, web, motion)
Demonstrated proficiency in design tools such as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and AfterEffects.
Exceptional communication and storytelling skills.
Experience working with designers from different backgrounds.
Passion for visual design and pushing boundaries.
Experience in a fast paced, deadline oriented environment.
