'The Web' is an immersive installation that addresses the significance of the Internet and mobile
devices in our lives while simultaneously examining the role of the viewer.
It offers both an accessible and impermeable user experience, the title referencing a closed-circuit
network accessed by viewers.

The Web is an immersive installation that addresses the significance of the Internet and mobile devices in our lives while simultaneously examining the role of the viewer. The idea for the piece came to Jon Kessler on a New York subway ride when he realized that at least half of the riders were speaking on their cell phones, sending text messages, playing video games, or otherwise immersing themselves in their networked mobile devices.

The Web offers both an accessible and impermeable user experience, the title referencing a closed-circuit network accessed by viewers. Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are invited to download an iPhone app that feeds their images in real time onto surrounding monitors. Simultaneously pictured and reframed in Kessler’s sculpture Infinite Regress, spectators render themselves as nodes within a feedback network, the space a physical support for their virtual daydreams. Kessler’s creation broadcasts collected data, targeting viewers with images of themselves, their experience, and ultimately enticing input and generating output.

Much like the Internet itself, The Web acts as both a sentient organism and an environmental space: it facilitates the internal circuit between viewer, camera, and monitor, while simultaneously doubling as a sprawling architectural structure. While The Web conceptually foregrounds the role of networked technologies and our dependence on them, it is in many ways a tribute to direct experience. The viewer of The Web is repositioned among fellow viewers, with the feeling of sensory dislocation condensed into one geographic location—the exhibition space—and recast as a form of shared collective immersion.

Jon Kessler’s work explores the connection between bodily movement and technical apparatus, often deploying mechanisms and video to facilitate this relationship. He has had solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the Phoenix Kulturstiftung; Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg, Germany; the Louisiana Museum of Moderne Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark; and most recently, the Fisher Landau Center for Art, New York. Kessler has been awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship as well as honors from the Foundation of the Performing Arts; he is a professor at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, Division of Visual Arts.

The Métamatic Research Initiative (MRI) stems from the fascination of art collectors Allard and Natascha Jakobs with the work of Jean Tinguely, and a more general interest in questions about the authorship of works of art. MRI strives to deal with issues that arise from the work of Jean Tinguely, in particular his Métamatic works. By initiating a variety of assignments for artists they instigate a process of artistic research resulting in contemporary works addressing these issues.

The exhibition will travel to Museum Tinguely, Basel, in October 2013.

Moving Images. An exhibition of video installations and films from the 60ies till today, which explore failure from many different angles and present playful, passionate, tragic, amusing, mournful and surprising approaches to the concept of 'failing to succeed'. Within the realm of art, failure has always been closely linked to the creative process. "Try again / fail again / fail better" is how Samuel Beckett described it.

The American sociologist Richard Sennett once described failure as the great modern taboo. Success, career advancement, performance and profit maximisation are increasingly important in today's society, leaving little room for failure, defeat, loss, disenchantment or disillusionment. But is failure only a matter of being defeated, reaching the end of the line? Or can an apparent failure not also lead to something else – something new, different or unexpected? Within the realm of art, failure has always been closely linked to the creative process. "Try again / fail again / fail better" is how Samuel Beckett described it.

The Irish writer made repeated and lengthy visits to the Hamburger Kunsthalle when he visited Germany around 75 years ago; now, in line with his maxim, the Kunsthalle is mounting an exhibition of moving images – video installations and films from the 60ies till today – which explore failure from many different angles and present playful, passionate, tragic, amusing, mournful and surprising approaches to the concept of 'failing to succeed'.

Louisiana’s large-scale spring exhibition celebrates the phenomenal Pop Art movement. Featuring many iconic masterpieces - Warhol, Lichtenstein, Hamilton, Eames, Panton and Sottsass - Pop Art Design highlights the close and inspirational collaboration between artists and designers of the period.

Pop stands out as the most influential, fascinating and easily recognizable movement of the post-war years. Young, wild, witty, bold, colourful and sexy, Pop literally exploded onto the art and design scene in the late 50s and early 60s, marking a fundamental break-through in values, motives and aesthetics.

With its new, fresh appeal and provocative use and re-interpretation of everyday objects and wellknown imagery, Pop reached out to far more people than art and design had ever done before. Profoundly changing our viewpoints and perception of the world.

The years 1955-1972 were marked by optimism and a boom in consumer culture and creative outpour in both USA and Europe, influenced by mass production, new materials, new technology, media and advertising. The dialogue between artists and designers flourished, breaking down boundaries and resulting in cross-fertilizations between the genres.

Pop Art Design is in fact the first extensive exhibition on the interrelations between art and design
of the period. Here we are presented with a more varied and exciting perspective of the Pop phenomenon,
finally recognizing the central role of design in the history of the movement.

Divided into a number of visually striking themes, the exhibition mixes works of art and design
and showcases the many different expressions and forms of Pop.
Some 180 works are featured in all, many of them icons and classics by the most important players
from both fields: Warhol, Rauschenberg, Hamilton, Oldenburg and Lichtenstein as well as designers
like Eames, Panton, Castiglioni and Sottsass.

While embracing the year of 2013, MoCA,Shanghai sincerely invites two Chinese artists Tian Wei and Qiu Jie, who have lived in oversea countries for a long time, to present you a refreshing joint exhibition. Though their perspectives and styles differ from each other, their works reveal same profound life comprehension. MoCA Shanghai wishes to bring the audience to a self-reflecting, peaceful journey for mind through this exhibition.

Both Tian Wei and Qiu Jie were born almost at the same unique period of time in China. They started their journey to the West, experienced different cultures in America and Europe; on their way, they felt confused and even lost when trying to find their sense of belongingness. The overall environment in China has now becomes more internationalized and opened; where different cultures and ideas seem to achieve the peak time for interacting and impacting on each other, thus we sincerely hope our audience may reflect a little and reach to some common understandings through their works.

A l’initiative de Coca-Cola France et réalisé en partenariat avec le magazine Neoplanète, ce concours est ouvert du 11 février au 24 juin 2013 :
• aux étudiants inscrits dans un cycle d'enseignement supérieur (écoles supérieures de design, d’arts appliqués, d’arts plastiques, mais aussi d’architecture, d'ingénierie, de commerce...)
• aux jeunes professionnels de moins de 30 ans (indépendants ou salariés).

Les participants doivent créer un objet utile, original et innovant à partir d’emballages de produits de grande consommation. Il s’agit de transformer les emballages en produits de qualité, esthétiques et tournés vers l’éco-conception. Une sélection de 10 projets fera l’objet d’un accompagnement par les Sismo dans le but d'aider chaque candidat à enrichir sa proposition. Les dix finalistes seront jugés par un jury, présidé par les Sismo, composé de professionnels du monde du design et du développement durable, de représentants de Coca-Cola France et et de Néoplanète.

A la clé l’obtention d’une dotation de 5 000 € allouée au projet gagnant et surtout d’un soutien des Sismo pour aider le lauréat à développer son projet ; le gagnant reste propriétaire de sa création.

The Italian-born duo behind Formafantasma, Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi, explained: “the design is driven by the symbolic connotations of leather, a material that, more than any other, represents the complex relationship between humans and nature. Leather has the ability to evoke almost ancestral memories of when nature was hunted to produce food, tools and protection for the body. Searching underneath and above the sea, from the vegetal to the animal world, the installation offers a holistic view on leather as a material.”

Stefan Sagmeister The Happy Show exhibition

The Happy Show offers visitors the experience of walking into the designer’s mind as he attempts to increase his happiness via mediation, cognitive therapy, and mood-altering pharmaceuticals. “I am usually rather bored with definitions,” Sagmeister says. “Happiness, however, is just such a big subject that it might be worth a try to pin it down.” Centred around the designer’s 10-year exploration of happiness, this exhibition presents typographic investigations of a series of maxims, or rules to live by, originally culled from Sagmeister’s diary, manifested in a variety of imaginative and interactive forms.

Stefan Sagmeister The Happy Show is organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania and curated by ICA’s former Daniel W. Dietrich, II Director Claudia Gould.

This will be the first exhibition organised in Europe on the important Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC) and the most comprehensive to date as well.

The project belongs to the collaboration agreement signed in 2011 between Museo Reina Sofía and Fundación Cisneros / Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. Its main aim is to enhance interest and knowledge on the importance of Latin America in the history of Modern and Contemporary art, through developing a number of jointly organised cultural initiatives.

Curated by Manuel Borja-Villel, director of Museo Reina Sofía, and Gabriel Pérez- Barreiro, director of Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, the show will be composed by approximately two hundred works —painting, sculpture, installation, collage and graphic work— that will grow awareness on a key period of Latin American modernism (from the 40s to the 70s), many previously unseen in Spain.

This will thus confirm Museo Reina Sofía’s growing interest in Latin America’s cultural scene, as well as its vocation of taking an outstanding position as a museo del sur (“southern museum”). Concrete Invention will include masterpieces donated by Patricia Phelps de Cisneros to MoMA and which will travel to Spain in the near future.

Some examples are Hélio Oiticica’s Box Boilde; Joaquín Torres-Garcia’s Construction in Black and White; or Cildo Meireles’ Fio. Prominent Venezuelan artists such as Gego, Jesús Soto or Carlos Cruz-Díez; Brazilians such as Mira Schendel, Lygia Clark or Lygia Pape, and Argentines such as Tomás Maldonado and Gyula Kosice will be represented in the show. Other relevant creators included will be Alejandro Otero, Alfredo Hlito, Milton Dacosta, Aluísio Carvão, Alfredo Volpi, Willys de Castro, Judith Lauand, Jac Leirner, Antonieta Soto, César Peternosto, Rhod Rothfuss or Waltercio Caldas. Besides, a painting by Piet Mondrian will dialogue with works by other artists whose work was strongly influenced by the Dutch artist.

The exhibition will also have two interactive spaces that will give visitors access to archive material in different media. In addition, some of the exhibited artworks will remain as commodatum at Museo Reina Sofía upon termination of the show.

One of the main aims of the exhibition responds to the wish to analyse and contrast the different intentions underneath the language of Latin American geometric abstraction and its derivatives. Instead of focusing on a chronological sequence or geographic context, Concrete Invention addresses the artists’ intentions as the primary source.

The show will incorporate two technologic platforms with very different objectives: a playful, interactive website, with a social network approach, accessible and easy to surf through, both on a computer and on a smartphone; and an iPad app, with a more educational mission, allowing the user to explore and learn through broad access to videos, documents, audio and other digital materials.

This isn’t the first time that Fundación Cisneros / Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and Museo Reina Sofía work together. In March, 2012, a first project was jointly concluded: the international seminar Rethinking Latin American modernisms.

Flows and overflows; which gathered the most prominent international specialists on the subject of Modern Latin American art, with the intention of establishing the critical background that would help create the upcoming exhibition.

Atkins's solo show features a two-channel video and surround-sound installation. Recent activities of Metahaven studio have included a range of research, identity and product design for WikiLeaks, as well as proposals for the identity of Sealand, a self-proclaimed sovereign nation-state.
The firm Confettisystems creates set designs, objects, and interactive installations for a range of partners including corporate clients, musicians, and art institutions.
Jeff Elrod creates abstract paintings using basic computer software as a starting point.

Košice is inspirational - in many directions and at many levels. With its history, architecture, personalities who were creative or who are still creating, or by the genius loci itself. We can see Košice as the crossing of old routes, a crossroads between East and West. We feel the city centre and its atmosphere, as described by the famous Košice-born Sándor Márai – close to other historic towns in the region as well as the omnipresent countryside. From experience, we know that genuine Košice citizens, wherever they are, carry their city in their hearts. All this (and even more) will be included in our concept which will be rich and diverse. We would like to make the people of Košice happy and surprise all those who visit Košice. We will offer a programme, thanks to which they will feel like they are in the heart of Europe when they are in Košice. In a city which is at the crossroads between old and new, historic and contemporary. In a unique city.

Dal 1° febbraio al 26 maggio 2013, Merano Arte ospiterà un grande evento espositivo che vedrà
protagonista Cindy Sherman (Glen Ridge, 1954), una delle personalità dell’arte contemporanea
più influenti e apprezzate a livello mondiale. Curata da Gabriele Schor, in collaborazione
con la Collezione Verbund di Vienna, la mostra – per la prima volta in Italia, dopo le tappe alla
Vertikale Galerie di Vienna e al Centre de la photographie di Ginevra - presenta 50 opere
che la fotografa e regista americana realizzò tra il 1975 e il 1977 a Buffalo, agli albori della sua carriera,
quando era poco più che ventenne.

I lavori proposti a Merano, infatti, appartengono al periodo di formazione di Cindy Sherman avvenuto
alla State University of New York di Buffalo, quando decise di abbandonare gli studi sulla pittura,
per dedicarsi completamente alla fotografia. Qui produsse un ampio corpus di opere che sono le fondamenta
su cui costruì il suo percorso creativo, e che anticipano la famosa serie Untitled Film stills che creò
a New York, tra il 1977 e il 1980.
